“To help inspire the nation and encourage them to rewild their curiosity, Hendrick’s Gin has unveiled its enchanting ‘Curious Idols’ on Londons South Bank, created in collaboration with the talented contemporary artist Elliott Rooney. The installation sees 3 delightful, theatrical pieces of art come to life, immortalising the incredible curious thinkers who are shaping this century & can excite us all to explore, discover and create.”
Patricia Allison known for her work in TV & theater as well as her deep connection with nature serve as the inspiration for this sculpture. The concept centers around the use of mirrors to show an immersive world where observers can become part of the sculpture. Like being engrossed in TV or theater it resonates with people on a personal level seeing themselves in the characters played. I wanted to take that idea & put the viewer in a place where they can see themselves literally connecting you with Patricia.
The sculpture consists of two mirrored walls facing each other, generating an infinite optical illusion reflecting the viewer & natural surroundings. The idea came from a quote by Patricia, speaking of the grounding nature of the natural world. “It’s constant presence from the air we breathe to the rising & setting of the sun, the cycle of the moon & the emergence of stars at night. These phenomena occur effortlessly without requiring any action from us, much like our innate ability to breathe.”
After researching traditional sculptures I knew I wanted to make a contemporary bust of Patricia but using modern technology & tools. With the help of the amazing @hobs3dteam We recreated the exact replica of her head & shoulders. This was then 3D printed & sprayed metallic silver to fit in with the surroundings. This sits on a mirrored plinth which with the help of @chou_rouge_creative I wanted to feel like it was growing out of the ground. Pollinating flowers grow from the base of the plinth attracting bees & wildlife to the South Bank, creating a harmonious connection with nature.
